Hasini Jayawardena

Hasini is a graduate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she studied sociology and political science while pursuing a Certificate in Social Work. She is an international student originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka. She recently worked as an immigration and refugee policy intern at Church World Service in DC, where she was able to mix her passion for justice and advocacy and found deeper levels of interest in the Global Migration Crisis and Migration in general. Through her lived experience in Sri Lanka, she has seen how the plight of women comes with violence even if they are protected by various other social and economic safety nets. This has led her to have a great level of interest in writing about gender based violence, particularly the use of sexual violence in Sri Lanka as a form of maintaining the status quo. She believes that no one is free until everyone is free and justice is essential to human progress. She believes passionately that liberation is core to our existence and if we are creatures of free will then it is essential that all of us have access to it.

Naomy Castillo Cuellar

Naomy is 22 years old and is Cuban. She graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in sociology. For her art is life; which is to say that everything has meaning. She appreciates it from a piece displayed in a museum, to a presentation of a scene in theatre, to photography. Everything that can be related to art she is passionate about, but she identifies most with dance.

Dance is a unique and versatile universal language, and in her life it has great importance. She has danced as a hobby since she can remember, and at seven years old started to take dance classes. She hasn’t practiced it professionally, but it is something that gives her life. Four years ago she began to be part of the institutional group of contemporary dance “Entalpía” at the University of Havana and she loves all that it does.

In her major of sociology she has infused lines of study of which she is particularly interested in. Including fashion, and the different successes, processes and distinct aspects of a society. Focusing on the youth in society and the impact of the different processes and fashions that surround it day to day.
